TORONTO — The Globe and Mail was the top winner at the 2022 National Newspaper Awards, collecting nine prizes at a gala in Toronto Friday.The Globe’s Grant Robertson set a record for most career wins with his ninth award, this time in the sports category for a three-part series on the Hockey Canada scandal.La Presse collected six honours, including the international reporting award for Isabelle Hachey’s dispatches from Ukraine, as well as the column prize for her writing on the war-town country. Hachey also took home the coveted journalist of the year award. The Canadian Press, Halifax Chronicle Herald, National Post, St. John’s Telegram, Toronto Star, Torstar and the Vancouver Sun/The Province each earned one. A male motorcyclist suffered serious injuries following a crash in Mississauga.The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division said the collision happened Friday night westbound on the Hwy. 401 on-ramp approaching Hwy. 410 northbound.An image from the scene shared by police showed the motorcycle in a ditch.A 21-year-old male suffered serious injuries in the crash.Police said the ramp remains open. CHICAGO -- Angry parents are speaking out after a last minute venue change leaves dozens of students shut out of prom this weekend.Parents of some students at Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School said they've spent hundreds, even thousands, on dresses, tuxedos, hair, and makeup, and other preparations for their children's prom. Steady rain forced the suspension of the Saints’ game with the Nashville Sounds on Friday night at CHS Field. The game will resume at noon on Saturday in the bottom of the third inning with the Saints trailing 3-2.The regularly scheduled game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.Simeon Woods Richardson started for the Saints and pitched three innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four. It’s a case that’s already five years old.The murder victim’s friend, Daniel Howard, said outside Friday, “Look at the predicament it’s putting the judge in.”Howard has been here through delays and prosecutor no-shows. He said, “Year after year, month after month.”His friend Gregory Stevens was stabbed to death in March 2018. Defendant Charl Howard says he’s innocent. He’s also frustrated by the delays. MENLO PARK — A 30-year-old Cincinnati man has been sentenced to 26 years to life in prison for the brutal killing of a Menlo Park woman in 2018, prosecutors said.Handed down Thursday, the sentence follows a 19-day trial earlier this year that ended in a jury convicting Francis Wolke of first-degree murder, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
